Understanding the ABCs of Mutual Fund RRSPs
Imagine a scenario in which (depending on your tax bracket) the Canadian government pays you almost half (depending on your tax bracket) of the money you require to make an investment in a mutual fund of your choice. Then when you’ve made money off the mutual fund, either through interest earned in a fixed-income fund, or capital gains generated by your equity fund, the government tells you that you don’t have to pay tax on it.
Sound far-fetched? Not at all if you are among the one in three Canadians taking advantage of the federal government’s most generous form of tax relief - the Registered Retirement Savings Plan – or RRSP.
An RRSP is a government approved program designed to encourage Canadians to save for their retirement by providing powerful tax reduction options. Millions of Canadians have taken advantage of these tax reduction options by having part or all of their RRSP investments in mutual funds. The tax breaks for a mutual fund RRSP come in two forms. The first is that once you set up a mutual fund RRSP, the financial contributions you make are deductible from your taxable income.
Take the following example: 20-year-old Samantha contributes $5,000 to a mutual fund RRSP. Samantha is in the middle tax bracket whose marginal combined federal/provincial tax rate is somewhere around 42% (depending on which province she resides in) and would therefore receive a tax refund of $2,100. Therefore, the “real” cost of the mutual fund is only $2,900, but the full $5,000 is still working inside the plan.
The second tax advantage resides in the sheltering of the income and capital gains that are generated by investments, including mutual funds in your RRSP. Simply put, your money is allowed to grow tax free. Anyone who has invested in a fixed-income fund (outside of an RRSP) knows that the interest earned is heavily taxed. Likewise, a capital gains tax is levied on investments like equity mutual funds. But all investments including mutual funds within an RRSP are effectively “sheltered” from tax and allowed to compound.
Using the same example of a mutual fund holder in a 42% tax bracket, let’s examine the effects of a fixed-income mutual fund over a five year period, assuming a 10% annual growth rate both inside and outside an RRSP. In a registered or sheltered plan where no tax is paid, a $10,000 investment would grow in value to $16,105 in five years. Outside of an RRSP, the investor would be required to pay $2,357 in tax resulting in a cumulative value of only $13,257.
So why does the government allow such generous forms of tax relief? It realized that with a rapidly aging population simply does not have the resources to support the growing numbers of retired Canadians who will be dependent on government-sponsored pension plans in the future. RRSP mutual funds are one method by which the government can encourage people to take responsibility for their financial future.
There are, however, limits as to how much an individual can contribute to an RRSP on an annual basis. Each year, taxpayers are allowed up to 18% of the previous year’s earned income to a maximum of $13,500 (provided they aren’t already members of a registered pension plan or a deferred profit-sharing plan). If the taxpayer is a member of a sponsored pension plan, they can contribute the same amount minus a calculation, called a pension adjustment, or PA.
There are many ways to invest in an RRSP, but none is growing in popularity as quickly as mutual funds. Mutual funds offer diversification not only among security and asset classes, but also internationally, through opportunities for foreign investment. They offer the easiest way to take advantage of rules which allow up to 30% of your RRSP to be allocated internationally.
Once you have determined the amount of money you can afford to invest, the next decision involves selecting which funds are best suited to you. A mutual fund RRSP can be tailored for growth, for fixed returns, or for a balanced investment strategy. It is best to explore your options with an Investment Professional – after all, it’s your money and your future.
This article was prepared by Fidelity Investments for Michael Arbetov CFP, who is an Investment Professional with Portfolio Strategies Corp.
Read a fund’s prospectus and consult your investment professional before investing. Mutual funds are not guaranteed; their values change frequently and past performance may not be repeated. Investors will pay management fees and expenses, may pay commissions or trailing commissions, and may experience a gain or loss.

Air Travel: The Importance of Booking Your Flight Early
by Flight and Air Travel
Perhaps, the greatest benefit of booking your airline reservations early is the comfort and peace of mind that you will get out of doing so. It is no secret that traveling, especially by air can be stressful. By having your plans made well before your trip, you are less likely to be nervous about your travels. There is no having to worry about later seeing an increase in travel costs or full flights.
Making your airline reservations early and well in advance of your trip also gives you the opportunity to accurately compare prices and airlines. This a great way to find the best deals. In fact, you should never make airline reservations without first checking and comparing prices. When booking a flight, it is important to remember that you will have choices and most of your choices will come with different price tags.
Speaking of which, that leads to another benefit of making your airline reservations well in advance of your trip. You typically receive better deals when making your travel plans early. With that said, if you later check flight prices, after already purchasing your tickets, and notice a decrease in prices, be sure to contact the airline in question. When asked, they may refund you any price differences.
Making your travel plans early and well in advance of your trip can also give you the opportunity to make other travel plans, especially those that are associated with your airline reservations. For example, do you need to have someone pick you up from the airport? If so, you will want to give them enough notice, which, in turn, should give them enough time to make arrangements. If you must drive yourself to the airport, take the time to examine all of your parking options, as well as costs.
Also, when making your travel arrangements early and well before your trip, you are likely to have more flight choices to choose from. This is an important fact that many travelers do not take into consideration. You will want to remember that most airports have multiple flights going to your destination. In fact, in addition to multiple times a day, there are also likely to be different airlines offering flights as well. This is ideal for travelers who are picky or limited with their travel times.
In keeping with your options, making your airline reservations well in advance of your trip will also give you better seats to choose from. Most airlines will allow you to handpick your own seat, so you will want to get started early. This is especially important if you want something in particular, as such as a window seat or an aisle seat. Also, it is important to make your flight reservations early if you are traveling with children or if your larger family all wants to sit together.
As previously stated, making your flight arrangements early can allow you to make other travel arrangements, like having someone pick you up from the airport. Also, you will find that early flight reservations give you the opportunity to focus on other parts of your vacation, like the activities you can enjoy or the attractions that you want to visit.
As outlined above, there are a number of benefits to booking your travel arrangements, namely your airline reservations, well in advance of your trip. As a recap, doing so often provides you with comfort and peace of mind. Additional benefits include the ability to accurately price compare, getting the best seats, as well as having more options in terms of your departure and arrival times.

Canada Travel Should Include a Visit to Prince Edward Island
If your vacation plans include travel any where in Canada this summer, consider a departure from the everyday and charter a course for the gentle pleasures of Prince Edward Island. Your Canada travel itinerary would not be complete without a stay here.
Once on the Island, marvel at miles and miles of beautiful white, champagne, pink or red sand beaches. On Prince Edward Island shorelines your eyes will soar as high as a seabird and beyond to the top of the red sandstone cliffs that overlook the ocean.
If fishing is your forte, Prince Edward Island has a wealth of opportunity for the duration of the summer months. Charter a deep sea fishing expedition with friends and you could well wind up with Tuna, marlin or even shark as your reward for a long day's work, and well worth it. For something with less adventure, cast into the still waters beyond the bridge or off the end of a pier and Mackerel could soon find its way to the end of your line. For freshwater fishing, Brook or Rainbow trout could make fly-fishing in any one of PEI's winding rivers the perfect day trip.
PEI offers not only Canada's birthplace, but also a spectacular seascape and equally stunning landscape, rich and resplendent in rolling dunes, wetlands, lush fertile farmer's fields, and the sand and the high pitched cliffs. The diverse habitat of our special Island is home to boundless types of plant and wildlife, including the endangered Piping Plover.
Travel to the edge of Canada and from there, continue onwards across the marvel that is the Confederation Bridge and until you find yourself at the sapphire blue of the water's edge, then dip your toes in the warmest ocean waters north of Virginia. This is everything a vacation on this Gentle Island was meant to be. Everything and more.
Explore Cavendish, the home of Lucy Maud Montgomery's beloved classic Anne of Green Gables, one of the Island's main attractions. Hike or bike our green rolling hills. Then spend some time visiting craft shops in our quaint Island villages. Our pottery, woodworking, tapestries and quilts are as much a fabric of life on the Island as our rich history.
The perfect end to a perfect day should always include watching a magnificent Island sunset as it dips into the ocean. And the perfect night should remain at the water's edge, drinking in the tranquility that abounds. Be sure, however, to savor far, far more than just the ambience. Prince Edward Island is renowned for its seafood as would be expected so take the time to linger over your lobsters, order tons of tuna steaks, or chow down on the fresh baked bread that is certain to accompany your bowl of clam chowder, served piping hot and rich with cream or dairy products from an island farm, and thickened with the natural agent that is the Prince Edward Island potato.
All of this awaits you and more on Canada's east-coast jewel, The Gentle Island. All of this, and more.
Prince Edward Island is Canada's smallest and greenest province. Cradled on the waves of the Gulf of St. Lawrence, the Island is known for the vivid colours of its gently rolling landscape. Your perfect Canada travel destination! http://www.gov.pe.ca/visitorsguide/

How to Avoid Burning Your Hair With A Curling Iron
When using a curling iron it is important to remember that they are an electrical appliance and will get hot, there are some general safety tips and techniques that you should adopt to ensure that you do not get burnt. When you use the curling iron let it heat up for several minutes to the correct temperature and when applying to your hair hold your fingers around the handle and apply pressure on the moving part of the handle.
When you use the curling iron be careful to lift the hair carefully between your fingers and then move the iron down the strands, do not leave it on the hair for a great length of time else this will burn. As well as your hair you should also be careful not too burn your neck, ears, fingers or hands. Do not leave the curling iron plugged in for longer than is recommended in the instruction guide and make sure that when you have finished using it unplug from the mains to allow it too cool down.
If you have any great fears about burning your hair when using the curling iron then there are thermal protection products that can be bought. These come in the form of sprays. They are generally applied after washing and before the hair has dried. If you have more worries about burning your hair then you can purchase curling irons that have built in temperature controls, not only will this help to regulate the temperature and reduce the chance of damage but it will also help to prevent split ends from forming.
If you use the curling irons on a regular basis then keep in mind that applying direct heat to the hair can cause damage and you should use products to prevent this. Many people who regularly use them would add conditioning products to reduce the chances of getting heat damage.
If you do not need to use a curling iron then don't, give your hair a chance to recover and only use them when necessary. Burning your hair or causing frizzy hair can happen over a period of time and if it does occur then the only real way to repair the hair is too cut off the burnt areas. Remember as well especially in the summer your hair can be exposed to much more heat and there is a greater chance that you could burn the hair not only from using the curling irons but from the natural suns rays.
The top advice that can be given to avoid burning your hair when using your curling irons are to use in moderation and apply rejuvenating products in order to keep the moisture and the natural oils in the hair. There is no reason as to why using curling irons in the correct way will cause damage to your hair, always be careful and recognize the signs of damage.

Lower Your Tax Bill with a Spousal RRSP
Lowering your tax bill should be a primary goal in any financial plan, allowing you to free up money for the more important things in life such as retirement savings or funding a child's education. If you are married, one of the most effective ways to reduce your tax bill is to use an income splitting strategy to move income from the spouse in a high tax bracket to the spouse in a lower tax bracket. Contributing to a Spousal RRSP is one such strategy.
Canada's tax system is based on tax brackets. The more income you make, the more taxes you pay on that income. Therefore, if you can move income from someone in a high tax bracket to someone in a lower tax bracket, who will pay less tax on that same income, you can significantly lower your tax bill.
How Does It Work?
A Spousal RRSP is the same as a regular RRSP except that one spouse makes contributions on behalf of the other. Determine whether you or your spouse will generate most of your family's retirement income, and then open a Spousal RRSP for the spouse who will earn less. Let's assume that you are the higher earning spouse.
Your contribution to a Spousal RRSP is counted along with any contributions made to your own RRSP. The combined contributions can't exceed your individual available RRSP contribution room. In other words, you don't get any extra contribution room just because you are contributing on behalf of your spouse.
The Spousal RRSP - and any contributions made to it - is owned and controlled by your spouse. When money is withdrawn, it is included in your spouse's income, and taxed at their tax rate, provided the contributions have been in the Spousal RRSP for at least three years (otherwise, it's taxed at your rate). If you have planned correctly, that rate should be lower than yours.
The advantage of a Spousal RRSP is that it allows you to pay less tax in your retirement years, while at the same time allowing the higher-earning spouse to claim the deduction in the year of the contribution. If you would like to find out more about Spousal RRSP's, or want to discuss whether a spousal RRSP is right for you, please give me a call at (604) 875-8878, or e-mail me at michael@arbetov.com to set up an appointment.

The Truths About Hair Rebonding
It gives you silky, super straight hair, the way the girls in hair commercials look, and the way Jennifer Lopez and Faye Wong look, but it can also leave you bald.
In one of the case study, a 14-year-old girl had big clumps of hair falling off in the shower a year after the process. Her hair started breaking 2 months after being rebounded. Then another case when a woman is suing her hairdresser for bald patches on her head after a similar treatment. Her scalp started stinging during the process itself and hair fell off in clumps shortly after.
Hair rebonding is a process where the chemical bonds in your hair are broken, rearranged and bonded back again permanently using very strong chemicals. It is one of the most damaging things you can do to your hair.
During rebonding, perming lotion is added to soften the hair and break down its bonds. After this is washed off, hair is placed between 2 metal plates of an electric styling device, which uses heat to pull the hair rod-straight. A neutralizer is then applied to reset the bonds and stabilize the hair. Hair is irreversibly altered after the perming process. Chemically-treated hair shafts are weaker and fracture more easily. This can lead to hair loss.
Hair become fragile and has to be handled with extreme care after treatment. A natural reflex, like tucking your hair behind your ears or tying your hair in the first month after treatment, can be disaster.
The process can also cause damage and burns to the skin and scalp. For example hair can be damaged if the various chemicals are left on the hair for too long, or if ironing is done with an iron at higher than 180ºc.
Conventional methods of straightening hair use hair-straightening lotions, which result in dry, brittle, and split-ends prone hair. Rebonding gives you softer hair but higher risks because it uses more toxic chemicals.
Maintaining the rebonded look means continual touch-ups, at least, every 6 months. This puts you at further risk of hair loss, eventually, and prematurely, leaving your full head of hair nothing but a memory.

by Orville Campbell, MD
B12 helps your body to make life giving blood. A decrease in your red blood cell count is called anemia. Anemia can cause fatigue or poor energy and cravings for certain things such as ice. However, make sure your iron and RBC (red blood cell) folate levels are normal. This vitamin can help one to maintain a good memory, achieve or maintain better focus, mental clarity and achieve a feeling of well-being or positive mood. Your entire nervous system can benefit from this supplement. B12 is vital to maintain the nervous system in excellent working order.
This vitamin has been called energy in a bottle; because, it imparts energy, stamina, and vitality to those who take it. For best results/absorption, one should take b12 with other B complex vitamins, such as B1 (Thiamin), B2 (Riboflavin), B3 (Niacin), and B6 (Pyridoxine).
B12 applied to the skin (topically) may improve certain skin diseases such as atopic dermatitis and may be even psoriasis.
For individuals with kidney disease and on epogen (a medicine to prevent significant anemia), it can help to make the epogen more effective. Therefore, less medicine may be required. However, make sure your iron and RBC (red blood cell) folate levels are normal. These patients are especially prone to iron deficiency due to the reduced life expectancy of their red blood cells.
This supplement is helpful in protecting an unborn child from developing birth defects such as those defects affecting the spine.

Basic Skin Care Tips
Skin is the largest organ of the body. Healthy, beautiful skin is possible to achieve, but elusive to many. Good, basic skin care can help prevent many wounds. Good skin care involves regular cleansing with a gentle skin cleanser. Regular cleansing should be performed on an "as needed. Cleansing is a critical daily skin care step. It removes the dust and dirt that chokes the pores on the skin. Most people do this 2-3 times a day; this is adequate for normal skins. But,for oily skin type a more frequent cleaning is very essential-even 4-5 times a day, using either a soap or some kind of cleansing agent. Most cleansers contain oil, water and 'surfactants'. The oil dissolves oil on your face, surfactants dissolve dirt and makeup and the water washes it all away.
There are several alternatives to soap and water cleansing- creams, milks, lotions, foams, oils, gels and liquids. Avoid bar soaps as they tend to dry out the skin. A cotton pad doused in fresh milk is a cheap but equally effective cleanser. Exfoliation is the step most people skip in their weekly skincare routine. Exfoliating is the process of removing dead skin cells, which cause the face to look dull. The build up of dead cells can also contribute to blockage of the pores causing acne. Facial scrubs help clean the surface of the skin by removing the dead skins and the dirt mechanically. European women have been using exfoliants for decades. Skin exfoliation is suitable for greasy or normal skin, but should be used with caution on dry or sensitive skin.
There are several ways to exfoliate skin: Microdermabrasion, chemical peels and retinoids. Scrubs work by removing the top layer of dead skin cells that tend to dull your complexion. If your skin is sensitive, use a synthetic puff or natural sponge. Men are exfoliating their faces every day by shaving. The razor removes the top layer of dead cells every day. Toning the skin helps remove any leftover cleanser or make-up that may have been left behind. A toner also helps restore the natural pH level of the skin, leaves your skin clean, clear and ready to be hydrated. Toners not only cleanse the skin further and help in removing any remnants of particles that you may have left behind but also cools, nourishes, hydrates and freshens up your skin.
It tightens up skin and close up any skin pores that may have opened up while deep cleansing the face. Toners must be alcohol-free as alcohol dries off skin. Toning close the pores, tighten the skin, and keep it from being exposed to many of the toxins that are floating in the air or other environmental pollutants. Sunscreens protects the skin from any form of sun damage, wrinkles, sunburns or rashes. Facials help moisturize and massage the skin. Homemade facials are good quick fix solutions to pamper the skin with almost no side effects. Exercise, Facial massage and a healthy diet regime can complement your skincare routine and help the skin look healthy and nourished always. Good moisturizer helps the skin to balance and restores any damage that might have occurred to it overnight.
